Not for ourselves alone: Belonging in an age of loneliness

Review:  Today Andrew Dickens of Newtalk ZB interviewed New Zealand author Jenny Robin Jones about her just published book: Not for ourselves alone: Belonging in an age of loneliness.  She talks about our need for belonging; and our seeking to belong.  Whereas historically we were born into a community and took our place for granted, today we need to work at belonging for otherwise we feel lonely.  This change in society has been partly driven by the trend to individualism.

These days it is more difficult to belong; and we need to work at belonging for otherwise we will be isolated and possibly lonely. We need to actively engage with strangers – so that everyone feels that they belong. Social media is a two-edge sword, that due to spending so much time on the likes of Facebook can lead to feeling even more lonely.
